Washbasin siphon – what is it, what is it for, and what types are there?
A washbasin siphon is a component of a sanitary installation mounted under the sink. Its main purpose is to prevent unpleasant odors from flowing back from the sewage system and to ensure the free drainage of water.
Functions of a siphon:
- Prevents bad odors – thanks to the “water trap” (so-called water seal), it stops gases from the sewage system from returning to the bathroom.
- Protects the installation from impurities – e.g. hair or soap residue settle in the siphon instead of in the drainage pipes.
Types of washbasin siphons:
| Type | Description | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Bottle siphon | Has the shape of a vertical cylinder (bottle), compact and easy to clean. | Often used in bathrooms with limited space. |
| Pipe (P-trap/S-trap) siphon | A curved pipe in the shape of a “U” or “S”. A traditional type of siphon. | More durable and less prone to clogging. |
| Decorative (chrome) siphon | Made of metal, elegant, visible under the sink. | Used in bathrooms with open cabinets or designer sinks. |
| Siphon with washing machine/dishwasher connection | Has an additional inlet for a drain hose. | Suitable for multifunctional rooms. |
| Flexible (accordion) siphon | Can be bent at any angle, easy to install. | For non-standard installations or renovations. |
What to consider when choosing a siphon?
- Drain diameter – most commonly 32 mm or 40 mm.
- Material – plastic or metal.
- Ease of cleaning – access to the sediment trap or removable bottom.
- Compatibility with the type of sink – e.g. countertop, wall-mounted, with cabinet.
- Additional features – e.g. washing machine connection, click-clack plug.
