Installation height of a shower tray siphon – declarations vs. reality

Choosing the right siphon for a low shower tray is not just a matter of aesthetics and price, but above all of precise technical fit. One of the most important parameters is the installation height of the siphon, which determines whether the installation will proceed smoothly or require floor cutting and unplanned modifications

Why does installation height matter?

Modern low-profile shower trays offer exceptional comfort and accessibility, but they also introduce technical challenges. The space between the bottom of the tray and the floor is often only 50–55 mm. If the siphon does not fit within this space, installers may be forced to cut into the concrete floor—leading to extra costs, noise, and delays. In some cases, due to the structure of the slab, cutting the floor may not be possible at all.

Unfortunately, some manufacturers or sellers manipulate the declared installation height of siphons:

  • They do not include the gasket under the shower tray, which usually adds an extra 2–3 mm.
  • They provide only the body height, ignoring the fact that the drain outlet is not perfectly horizontal but angled (often at 15°), requiring an additional 5–7 mm in the floor.
  • They do not account for an extra 5–8 mm needed for the socket of the nut or pipe.

In practice, the definition of “installation height” is often not clearly specified—which can mislead customers.

The result? A customer who has planned 52 mm of space under the shower tray orders a siphon theoretically rated at “42 mm,” only to discover on-site that it does not fit. In the example above, the siphon is advertised with an impressive 40 mm height on the label or in-store display, but in reality, it requires nearly 60 mm.

Speed 2 solutions – a safe compromise between drain height and water seal height

The dimensions of Speed 2 siphons, available from Akces, take into account all of the above-mentioned dimensional “allowances” and genuinely allow for a 50 mm installation space—calculated with full assembly and outlet angle included.

In the next article, we discuss the body height of a shower tray siphon, its water seal, and compliance with the EN 274 standard.
